FAQ about the SEND Advice Service

What does the SEND Advice Service offer?

The SEND Advice Service at Skylarks offers free, impartial support and information in relation to the education needs of children and young people who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We advise on all aspects of education, such as EHCPs, home to school transport, how to request a school, annual reviews of EHCPs, how to request an EHC Needs Assessment and more besides. Please refer to our Menu of services, this is not exhaustive as we aim to be as flexible as possible in the help we offer.

Unfortunately, we do not normally provide representation for appeals to the SEND First Tier Tribunal, other than general advice on how to apply yourself or where you can get further help if you need it.

Your query may be answered by clicking on 'Book an online workshop' to join one of our regular webinars. Or refer to our information page to see our FAQ & Fact sheets about key topics, as well as useful links to other helpful websites. If your query requires a 1:1 appointment please follow the instructions below.

Do I have to pay?

In order to ensure our services are accessible to all of those who need it, we do not charge and do not restrict by geographical area. However, the work required is often time consuming and requires a high level of specliast knowledge. As a small, independent charity we rely on donations to be able to continue to provide this highly valuable service and we therefore appreciate any donations you can give.

How do I request 1:1 advice for a new query?

Step one - Set up a SEND Advice case: Click on 'New request for 1:1 advice' on this page (you will need to be logged on to the Skylarks website) where you will be taken to a form to set up a 'SEND Advice case' which will be where you will upload documents, see updates from the SEND Advice service and message the SEND Advice service. Details how to do that are here.

Step two - Once you have completed the form you will be taken to a link to book a 30 minute phone or Zoom video call (available throughout the week) or face to face appointment with the SEND Advice Service which take place term time on alternate Tuesday afternoons (2.30-5.30pm) and Friday mornings (10am-12pm) at The Crossway Centre, Twickenham, TW1 2PD.

Step three - please check your inbox for a confirmation email from advocacy@skylarks.charity (please check your Spam folder). These messages along with any updates will also be visible by clicking on 'My SEND Advice cases' in the top right corner when you log on to the Skylarks website (more details below).

How do I request additional appointments for a case the SEND Advice is already working on?

If you want to make an appointment to speak to us once your SEND Advice case has been set up (as above) please book a 30 minute phone or Zoom video call (available throughout the week) here .
You can also book a face to face appointment with the SEND Advice Service which take place term time on alternate Tuesday afternoons (2.30-5.30pm) and Friday mornings (10am-12pm) at The Crossway Centre, Twickenham, TW1 2PD here.

How do I get in touch with the SEND Advice Service?

For cases we are already working on, you will have a SEND Advice case set up from where you can message the SEND Advice Service and see our updates. You can access this by clicking on 'My SEND Advice cases' which will be visible in the top right corner (see diagram below) when you log on to the Skylarks website. From here you will be able to upload documents, see any subsequent updates and contact the SEND Advice Service. Details on how to do this are here.

Where we are not already working on a case, please complete the 'New request for 1:1 advice' to set up a SEND Advice service case from where you will be able to message the SEND Advice Service, or email advocacy@skylarks.charity for information.

I can no longer see my SEND Advice case when I log on to the Skylarks website - how do I get in touch?

Your SEND Advice case will be closed once your query has been answered, which will mean it is no longer visible when you click on 'My SEND Advice cases' as detailed in the diagram above.
If you have a new, unrelated query then please click on 'New request for 1:1 advice' on this page to open a new SEND Advice case.
If you have further information about a recently closed SEND Advice case, then please email advocacy@skylarks.charity and we will reopen the case for you.
