Skylarks mentor makes final of 'the piano'

Good luck to Michael Howell in the finals of the hit Channel 4 series; ‘The Piano.’

The Piano looks for the UK's top amateur pianists. As the fourth episode of The Piano Series 2 aired on Channel 4, Michael Howell, a recent music graduate from West London was discovered.

Michael is also a career coach for Skylarks Charity's ‘Spread Your Wings’ programme offer. He inspires the families and children on the course by sharing his personal story about his transition from GCSE to the world of work.

Michael has ADHD and autism and the piano as an instrument serves as his rock and a means of expressing himself and calming his anxiety since he started playing at age 11. At just 23, Michael has already achieved so much, from discovering classical music through a British Airways ad to learning the piano.

Practising on a mobile phone keyboard app to composing Baroque-inspired piano pieces he has a unique talent and creativity, showcased through his original compositions and libretto in a language of his own.

Rachael Chidgey, Progression Programme Manager of Spread Your Wings programme said: “Michael, we wish you the very best of luck with the final.  We are truly grateful for everything you have done for us so far at Skylarks. Whatever happens, keep following your passion and incredible talent. We can't wait to see where your musical journey takes you.”

Skylarks believes music is incredibly beneficial for children with additional needs, providing an outlet for emotional expression and enhancing cognitive development.  Engaging in musical activities encourages social skills, boosts confidence and promotes creativity, which is why Skylarks makes music therapy available to all children free of charge.

Additionally, music therapy offers therapeutic benefits, especially for children with disabilities, supporting their overall growth and happiness and is one of the many services Skylarks offers to children with additional needs and their families.

Find out more about the Spread Your Wings offer by joining an online presentation this Friday, 7th June from 12.00 - 12.30pm by Zoom. Book your place here.
