Home Education Support Group

Run by Aldona
Skylarks is pleased to host the local Home Education Support Group for parents of children with additional needs.

Taking place at The Crossway Centre, our home education support group is for parents who are either home-educating their child or children with additional needs or who are thinking about doing so. We also support parents whose children are not attending school for other reasons such as high anxiety levels, school-based anxiety, school refusal, formal exclusion or who are being encouraged to remove their child from a particular school or to de-register.

This group is led by Aldona from Hounslow Parent Carers Forum but is open to any parents from any borough

The aim of this group is to support parent-carers in their choices and decisions, to enable them to meet each other, share information and ideas and to learn more about services available to home educators. The group occasionally invites outside speakers for advice on rights and responsibilities, tutoring and education and other information.

While the parents are sharing ideas and supporting each other, the children and young people can join in with the activities we have on that day. On the Tuesday they are welcome to join our music therapy classes, cookery at 2.30pm, drama, karate and even have their hair cut! On the Friday, one of our volunteers can look after them in our playroom while the parents attend the meeting (please book in advance

During the Coronavirus pandemic, of course many of us have become unexpected home-educators of our children with SEND. This may have changed our views on the education of our children in a variety of ways.

This group is now meeting again "in real life" at our sessions at the Crossway Centre. We will socially distance as much as possible, parents are encouraged to wear a mask or face covering unless they are talking and we will open windows and doors as much as possible to allow air to flow freely.

Your child is welcome to go into the Stay and Play session while you attend the support group (subject to us having enough staff and volunteers on the day)

The dates are:

Tuesday 8th February

Tuesday 19th April

Tuesday 7th June

Times:
The times are from 2.30 to 3.45pm, but families are welcome to stay on until 5pm for activities such as music therapy, drama and karate (please book in advance)

This group is a safe space to discuss our experiences. We can learn from those who were already electively home-educating before the lockdown. We can support each other if we are making difficult decisions.
