Osteopathy at Skylarks
The Osteopathic Clinic at Skylarks opened in September 2007 offering osteopathic treatment to children with additional needs and their siblings.
Treatment sessions are held weekly during term time on Tuesday afternoons at the Crossway Centre. We usually have 2 or 3 osteopaths offering treatment at the same time in the same room.
We also offer play sessions, music therapy, drama and karate at the Crossway Centre on Tuesday afternoons, so you are welcome to combine your osteopathy appointment with any of our other activities. Please book these separately.
If our osteopathy appointments are fully booked, please put your child's name on the waiting list for the dates you are available and we will contact you if a space becomes available. Sometimes cancellations can happen at the last minute due to illness etc so please also check the website for last minute availability.
Due to Coronavirus, we need to allow extra cleaning time between clients. The new appointment times are:
3.00 – 3.30
3.45 – 4.15
4.30 – 5.00

What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is an ideal treatment for babies and children because it is safe and very gentle.
It can benefit a wide range of health problems from glue ear, asthma, and allergies to digestive disturbances such as colic and reflux. Osteopathy can also help in more complex situations such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and learning difficulties, as osteopaths look at the health of the individual as a whole not just individual symptoms.
Osteopaths use a very subtle contact to release tensions within the body, freeing blood and nerve supplies to encourage the body’s natural healing process, helping to restore health and well being. Most children find the treatment relaxing and enjoyable.
Treatments are offered in a relaxed informal atmosphere and are tailored to meet each child’s needs. An initial assessment is made on the first visit where a comprehensive case history is taken, an osteopathic examination is made, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. This takes about an hour and we try to include some treatment on the first visit. Follow up treatments are 30 minutes.
If you are taking part in our osteopathy clinic for the first time, please book two appointments of 30 minutes each, so that you have a 60 minute appointment on your first visit. After that you may need a 30 minute appointment every 2 or 3 weeks, as advised by your therapist. If your child has had osteopathy treatment with one of our therapists before, please book a 30 minute appointment. The therapist will then suggest how often to book appointments after that.
Our volunteer osteopaths, Janice, Gus and Gayle, are registered with the General Osteopathic Council and have completed extensive postgraduate training specialising in the treatment of children. Gus and Gayle are the therapists who deliver the treatment and Janice is their supervisor. Please book your first appointment with either Gus or Gayle and then try to book all further appointments with the same therapist.
The therapists will recommend how often you should make an appointment. They usually suggest every 2 or 3 weeks. If you make more appointments than that, we may ask you to cancel some or may have to cancel them ourselves. Please be considerate of other people who also would like to use this service. Thank you.

How much does it cost?
All our services are free of charge, in order to allow everyone to participate. However, we hope that you will find this service useful and wish to make a donation. An optional donation of £6.00 per session is suggested. This can be paid in cash or by contactless payment on the day

What do I need to do before I come?
Please bring a mask and/or visor with you for all adults (unless exempt).

What will happen when I arrive at the Crossway Centre?
There will be hand sanitising points throughout the building. Everyone must sanitise their hands on arrival and before leaving.
All adults and children will have their temperature taken using a digital contactless thermometer.
You will be asked to wear a mask and/or visor, unless you are exempt. Children do not have to wear a mask but may do so.
Buggies and prams must be left outside if possible, under the fire escape. For those who need their buggy/wheelchair inside because of medical equipment etc, please leave it at the far end of the hall where it will not obstruct exits or access to the lift.
What will sessions at the Crossway Centre look like?
All staff and volunteers will wear face masks and/or visors. The staff will also wear purple Skylarks T-shirts, so that you can recognise us!
We have added in extra hygiene measures. The staff and volunteers will clean high use areas frequently, will wash hands regularly and sanitise all communal equipment.
The staff will encourage social distancing. This means that you will be encouraged to come only for the activity you have booked in for and not to stay and chat unfortunately.
Please try not to use the lift unless you have to, as Skylarks staff can’t accompany families in the lift at the moment.
We can make you a cup of tea or coffee which one member of staff or volunteer will be responsible for handling. Please keep all hot drinks out of the reach of children.
You may bring your own snacks, but please do not share them and please do not bring anything containing nuts or sesame. Please do not leave water bottles where they might be used by others. Please supervise your children when eating to make sure they don’t leave food lying around and please clean up any spillages or leftovers.
Please wipe the toilet down, especially the seat and handle, after you or your child have used it.
If your child has a toileting accident, we ask you to clean up, as staff and volunteers can no longer do this. We will provide gloves and cleaning materials. Please have a spare set of clothes with you.
Donations can be made by contactless card reader, not in cash.
Anyone who is feeling unwell or showing any Covid-19 symptoms is asked not to attend. The symptoms can vary from person to person and from adults to children but may include:
· a high temperature
· a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot, for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
· a loss or change to sense of smell or taste – this means they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
· breathing difficulties
· vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps in children
When booking, you will need to tick to say that you agree with the following statements and procedures:
· I confirm that my family and I do not have symptoms of Coronavirus and will cancel our booking if we develop symptoms
· I confirm that my family and I have not knowingly been in close contact with anyone with a confirmed case of Coronavirus in the last 2 weeks
· I confirm that my family and I have not returned from any country requiring quarantine in the last 2 weeks
· I will follow the Coronavirus safety routines used by Skylarks
