NAS Coffee Mornings

If you have a child who has been diagnosed with autism or who you have been told is on the pathway or who you suspect may be on the spectrum, please come to the National Autistic Society coffee mornings at Skylarks. Everyone is welcome. Coffee, tea and biscuits are provided.

The coffee mornings often have a topic or theme. The next one will be:

"How can I help my child with autism to communicate?"

Hannah Johnson (Head of Specialist Resource Provision) at Tolworth Girls School. This is for girls aged 11 - 18 who have autism and social, emotional and mental health needs.

Recent topics covered:

Jonathan Rourke from KIDS will be talking about EHCP's and how one should be worded if you think your child might be best educated in a maintained (state) special school

Lynn Majakas, the head teacher of the new school Capella House in Twickenham will talk about the new secondary school which has just opened and the primary that will be opening in September 2020.

This time, we are delighted to welcome Natalie, the parent of a child on the spectrum. She will share her experience on how the SCERTS model is helping her support her child and choose the right therapies, strategies and interventions for her son.

The SCERTS® Model is a research-based educational approach and multidisciplinary framework that directly addresses the core challenges faced by children and persons with autism and related disabilities, and their families.

SCERTS® focuses on building competence in Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support as the highest priorities that must be addressed in any program, and is applicable for individuals with a wide range of abilities and ages across home, school and community settings.

With an increasing amount of resources to help children on the spectrum, sometimes it can be overwhelming to know which one is right and when to use it. The SCERTs framework can help clarify which goals to target when.

For the NAS Coffee Mornings, please just turn up any time between 10.30am and 12 midday and stay for as long as you are able. Places may be available in our creche downstairs: please email if you would like us to look after your child while you attend this support group.

The NAS coffee mornings are an opportunity for people to have a chat, share tips and information in an informal, supportive environment support with others who really ‘get’ autism.
