CARRIAge driving Sessions at Park Lane Stables for children and young people with physical disabilities
This special CARRIAGE DRIVING Session is specifically for children and young people (age 8-16) who have PHYSICAL DISABILITIES AND ARE WHEELCHAIR USERS. The carriage has been specially adapted for children and young people who are wheelchair users.
This session is for children or young people who are ambulatory wheelchair users or those who cannot walk at all. If the person wishes to participate without their wheelchair, there is a seat with a back installed on the carriage. The seat has very thin arm rests but these are more to ensure the participant remains secure and to aid them into and out of the seat rather than to rest their arms once seated. Those wishing to use the seat will also be required to climb a few steps (with help) onto the carriage.
For those wishing to remain in their wheelchair, the carriage is adapted so that the seat can be removed easily and a ramp can be used to wheel the participant onto the carriage. They are then securely fastened onto the carriage similar to how they would be secured into a vehicle.
Family members and carers are asked to help the participant on and off the carriage at the start and end of the session and are welcome to walk along side at a safe distance.
Please note that all wheelchairs MUST be manual. Park Lane Stables cannot accept electric wheelchairs due to health and safety. All participants must also wear a riding hat whilst on the carriage.
A group of 3 young people will spend an hour accompanied by Park Lane Stables staff and volunteers and will each get a turn at driving the carriage.
