We are delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Richmond Run Fest for the second year running, to organise a special Skylarks race for children with additional needs as part of their Festival of Running

We have 50 free places for children with any additional needs or disabilities to take part in this one mile flat course. Children are welcome to be supported by an adult and the course is wheelchair accessible. Children with any additional needs such as autism, ADHD, sensory impairments, cerebral palsy etc are very welcome to take part in this fun run. Children can use whatever physical or emotional support they need to enable them to take part and achieve their goal in their own way. It is all about taking part, giving it your all, having fun and being part of the fabulous Skylarks winning team!

Richmond’s Largest Kids Fun Run

Saturday 14th September, late afternoon

Richmond Run Fest is fast approaching, with a wide range of runs for adults and children. We are delighted that our corporate sponsors Haymarket Media will have many people running for us that weekend!

For the second year running, we are delighted to be part of this large community event, in the form of a special race for our children with additional needs on the Saturday afternoon.

The Richmond Kids’ Mile is held in Old Deer Park, Richmond and is available for children aged 7-16.  Children can either do 1 lap (500m) or 2 (1 Mile).

The special mile will be preceded by live music and the Richmond Food & Fitness Expo. To add to the fun, Brentford FC CST, Marathon Kids and Lions Sports Academy also make an appearance bringing a variety of multi-sport activities to entertain the kids throughout the afternoon.

The special race will be towards the end of the afternoon. The exact time is to be confirmed. You are welcome to arrive any time in the afternoon and enjoy all the fun of the event.

Race director, Tom Bedford said: “After a successful trial last year with Me too & Co, we are excited to expand the all-inclusive mile race for children with special needs in a friendly, non-competitive environment where every child is a winner and receives a finishers medal at the end”.

"We are delighted to partner with the realbuzz.com Richmond RUNFEST. Together we will host the accessible mile for our children who have additional needs hence making the festival a truly inclusive event for the entire community. Our children and families look forward to participating in what will be a magical day of sport where they can have a real sense of achievement”. Jennifer Peters, Chair, Skylarks

We have got 50 free places in the special race.

We look forward to seeing our families there!

Special mile for Skylarks children

The small print and useful information

The race:

The race is a one mile course which starts and finishes in the same place and forms one loop around the Old Deer Park

One parent is welcome to run with each child and will be asked to wear a high-vis jacket which will be supplied.

Children may run on their own if they are confident and able to do so.

There is no time limit on the race and children can take as long as they need. There is no pressure to complete the race either; children can be supported to the finish line if they need.

The Skylarks race is likely to take place after the other races have finished.  Please allow plenty of time for getting there, parking, registering your child beforehand and enjoying the festival!

If you have more than one child with a disability, you can book a place for each of them for free in this race. Please think about whether you need to bring an extra adult with you for support.

Once you have finished the registration you will receive a confirmation email outlining all of the details you will need for the event and you will also receive a final instructions email with more race information and race schedule nearer the event.

Race Location:

The race will take place at Old Deer Park, Richmond, TW9 2SF.

This large green open space is located next to Pools on the Park Leisure Centre, just to the north of the A316 (Twickenham Road) close to Richmond Circus roundabout.
The nearest station is Richmond. This is serviced by overland and underground (District Line).

The 490 bus starts/terminates at Pools on the Park.

There is a cycle path running past the centre and numerous cycle racks outside the entrance for your use.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO PARKING IN POOLS ON THE PARK FOR THIS EVENT

Car parking: There is a public car park at the Old Deer Park car park off the A316 opposite the pool, on the south side of the A316.

Parking is fairly expensive here: £3.70 for up to 2 hours; £4.85 for up to 2 ½ hours and £5.80 for up to 3 hours. There are 2 disabled bays in the extension to the car park, behind RHACC.

On the day:

Toilets will be provided in portaloos in the park, including a wheelchair accessible portaloo.

Parents and children are asked to wear loose, non-restrictive clothing such as leggings or jogging trousers, no skirts for girls, and to wear trainers or other sports shoes suitable for running.

The run will take place whether the weather is beautiful or pouring with rain, so please dress appropriately.

The course is on grass and is fully wheelchair accessible if the weather continues to be fairly dry. However, if there is a torrential downpour of rain, then the ground may become muddy and unsuitable for wheelchairs.

We may have a few volunteers to help on the day, but please note that parents are responsible for their children at all times.

Siblings:

The Skylarks race is only for our children with disabilities. Their siblings are welcome to take part in the mainstream KIDS MILE races. These are paid for races and need to be booked separately.
